Biography

Dr. Dimitrios Roukounas holds a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Novi Sad and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Leeds. His doctoral thesis was related to the computer-aided design and chemical synthesis of enzyme inhibitors. During his PhD studies he was the recipient of a scholarship from the University of Leeds and a Marie Curie Research Grant.

 

He began his patent career in 2001 at a major Greek pharmaceutical company, where he set up and managed its patent department. In 2006 he qualified as a European Patent Attorney. Dr. Roukounas established a private practice firm in Athens in 2007, which provided patent related services to domestic and international clients. In 2012 he relocated his company to Munich.

 

Dr. Roukounas has obtained the Diploma “Patent Litigation in Europe” from the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI), University of Strasbourg and he is a representative before the Unified Patent Court (UPC).

 

Dr. Roukounas has particular expertise in the pharmaceutical field. In this respect he has advised numerous companies on the development of generic pharmaceutical products by providing patent validity, infringement and freedom to operate opinions. He has also provided advice in matters related to Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) for pharmaceutical products. In addition, he has supported legal teams in patent litigation proceedings.

 

Other technical areas of his practice include organic chemistry, cosmetic products, food packaging, life sciences, and medical devices.

 

He is a member of the Institute for Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office (epi).

 

He is a member and former chairman of Examination Committee III (paper D) and a former member of the Examination Board of the European Qualifying Examination at the European Patent Office.
